OVS, in
partnership with Redox and Logan Labs,
offers a unique solution to help you the
grower, determine your crops’ soil
fertility needs. We offer a soil test
that shows not only chemically extracted
nutrient levels (traditional) but also
the levels of nutrients that are in
solution. The difference being that
those nutrients in solution are
available for the plant, the others are
“locked-up” and are unavailable in the
soil reserve. OVS Crop Consultants will
help you interpret the powerful Redox/Logan
data and advise you in how to proceed,
and optimize, your fertilization
program. |

Soil samples can be taken at any time
during the year, however the best timing
is generally after harvest or before
planting. Our consultants will design
and implement a representative soil
sampling protocol that will provide the
optimum information to suit our clients
needs. Contact one of our crop
consultants for further information. |

OVS will also assist you in taking plant
tissue samples, interpreting the data generated
from lab analysis and generating an action plan
to address any indicated issues of economic
concern. Timings, techniques and frequency can
vary from crop to crop and site to site, however
it is key to take a representative sample at the
same timing (phenological stage) of the plant
from year to year. Tissue samples are valuable
in that they integrate all the factors that
might influence nutrient availability and
uptake, it reveals what is actually within the
plant. Timings and techniques for some crops
include the following; |
|
1. Wine Grapes - Preferably
the leaf opposite of the
flower cluster during bloom.
50 leaves/sample. |
|
2. Blueberries - Mid-shoot
leaves should be taken
anytime from late-July to
mid-August. 50
leaves/sample. |
|
3. Hazelnuts - Shoulder
height mid-shoot leaves
should be taken in August.
50 leaves/sample. |
4. Caneberries - Collect 50
of the newest fully expanded
promocane leaves
approximately 12" from the
tip
from late-July through mid-August. As with other crops do not
mix cultivars. |

OVS also
provides a variety of other agronomic
field services including nematode
sampling, diagnostics of herbicide
damage and other environmental stresses,
also analysis of the soil’s physical
factors. Additionally, we offer
comprehensive
IPM services. Again, in all facets of
our Agronomic Services we offer our
experience in interpreting the generated
data and an action plan to address
consequent issues. |
