Bamboo is used in several specialty ag industries. Nurseries and vineyards use bamboo for staking up new growth, allowing the trunks to develop straight and upright.  In vineyards, these same stakes can be used for grow tube stability.   Christmas tree growers use short stakes to straighten the leader at the top of the tree.

OVS purchases bamboo from a vendor that has their own packing and warehousing facility in China, insuring quality control. The bamboo is grown in the mountains of China in three separate provinces. The bamboo that is used for agriculture is farmed and not cut from natural forest growing areas. Therefore Panda habitat is not an issue.  OVS sources only #2 grade bamboo. This is the highest grade of agricultural bamboo there is (#1 grade is used in fly rods). All of the bamboo has been fumigated and is completely free of pathogens.

OVS purchases bamboo that has been selected from over 1500 species of bamboo. The unusually strong yet lightweight bamboo has a hard exterior shell and inner lining and is highly resistant to rot.  It has a tensile strength of approximately 48,000psi, or roughly three times that of a weed stake of the same size.  By using a smaller stake without sacrificing strength, it’s a way save money and have minimal root disturbance when inserting the stake alongside the plant material.

Metal pencil rod is an option to bamboo, for those agricultural uses where stakes may be moved from one project to another (and the stakes need to last for five years or more) or where mechanical cultivation may be used.   OVS offers high carbon steel stakes, .2184 in diameter, in lengths of 3’, 4’ and 5’.
