Books

OVS carries a large selection of books for the specialty ag producer.  Some titles specifically deal with biodynamic, organic or sustainable farming.  An inventory list of books follows.

Three of the books are highlighted below.

Oregon Viticulture, published by Oregon State University Press, is a first-rate book on the Oregon wine industry. It includes sections on vineyard planning, vineyard development and vineyard management. It is one of the textbooks used in the Chemeketa Community College Viticulture program.

A second excellent reference book for the grape grower is The Compendium of Grape Diseases, published by APS Press. Available in both English and Spanish, sections of the reference book were written by 40 different active researchers or recognized experts on the subject.  It is written for those with limited training in viticulture and pathology, but has sufficient detail to be useful to students and professionals alike. Excellent photographs are throughout the book.

A third book, Mainline Farming for Century 21, was highlighted in the July 2006 Outlook newsletter. The article follows.

Foliar Nutrition For Real

I just returned from a two-day class taught by Dr. Dan Skow of International Ag Labs of Fairmont, Minnesota. Dr. Skow is a practicing veterinarian and author of Mainline Farming for Century 21, who studied with the late Dr. Carey Reams. Dr Skow teaches and consults with farmers worldwide regarding the theories developed by Dr. Reams, including the Biological Theory of Ionization. Among Dr. Reams associates was none other than Albert Einstein. Reams and Einstein also corresponded with Dr. William Albrecht, the famous soil scientist at the University of Missouri, and the author of the still widely revered “Albrecht Papers, Vols. I-IV.” These 20th-Century scientific giants collaborated (along with Dr. Phillip Callahan) in the development of agricultural theories that are not widely publicized, but remain jewels of esoteric knowledge. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to attend this class, since it was last taught by Dr. Reams in 1983.

It baffles me that the work of Dr. Reams is not more widely taught, but there are a number of farmers and ranchers utilizing his research findings to good effect. This particular course I attended focused on his work with foliar nutrition. Dr. Reams experimented exhaustively testing the effectiveness of foliar sprays. He tagged mineral elements like phosphorous, calcium and magnesium with radioactive molecules and then followed their absorption (or lack thereof) and movement within plants with a Geiger Counter. His work demonstrated that nutrition was indeed absorbed through the leaves, stems and fruit of plants, but certain elements had to be present in the solution to facilitate the absorption. He found that phosphorous in the foliar solution was the key to opening the cell stomata, allowing nutrients to pass into the plant tissue. Once phosphorous had opened the door, most other nutrients could follow. Reams was convinced that proper nutrition could improve plant health, and help plants resist disease and insects. Here, I can’t begin to explain the myriad spray formulations discussed in this class, but I will be revealing several formulations and processes in future newsletters. For the insatiably curious, I suggest a quick read of Skow’s book (in stock at OVS).
