OVS
sells supplies for two main styles of deer
fencing - plastic mesh or graduated woven wire.
In addition, smooth wire for a New Zealand style
fence
is also available. Shorter rolls of wire for
pasture or corr al use are available by special
order.
Deer do an amazing amount of
damage to specialty ag crops. New plantings are
also especially susceptible to deer damage.
On the West Coast we have
Black-tailed deer and pockets of Mule deer. The
best method for crop protection is fencing
(although effective sprays are also available…
see the
Pest Control section).
Deer jump fences the same way
every time unless they are on a dead run, which
isn’t what they’re doing if they are interested
in feeding. They approach the fence closely,
possibly even touching it with their neck and
chest, and then leap vertically over the fence.
Fences are most successful at deterring deer if
firmly built with quality, high tensile wire .
Wire option:
OVS sells a 6’ graduated high
tensile, class 3, 12.5 gauge game fence. This is
commonly installed on wood or a combination of
wood and t-posts. If using wood, a 4-5” by 10’
post should be adequate, if placed every 16
feet, about 2 ˝ to 3 feet in the ground.
H-braces are constructed at the corners or at
gates. If t-posts are used, a 10’ heavyweight
post is recommended. Use a wood post every 4th
location if using t-posts as well, with posts in
this combination placed every 12 feet. Two high
tensile smooth wires are placed above the woven
fencing, giving additional height. Tensioners,
staples, post pounders and other miscellaneous
supplies will also be required. Call OVS for a
quote; we only need to know the number of lineal
feet you want to protect. |
