Deer Control

OVS offers a variety of methods for deer control. The most effective control is a fence (see Fencing).  An option for very young grapevines would be a grow tube (see Grow Tubes).  There are also several chemicals that can be sprayed directly on the plant to deter eating. For example:

Miller’s Hot Sauce:  Includes 2.5% capsaicin.  It is effective on fruits, nut trees, vegetables, vine crops and ornamentals. The Hot Sauce must be premixed with Vaporgard or Nu Film 17 for best efficacy. Deer won’t nibble more than once!

Bobbex: This product is an organic deer repellent made from beef and fish by-products. Bobbex breaks down into five or six sulfide compounds which deer, raccoons and other pets can’t tolerate because of the smell and the taste.

Deer Away:  Deer Away Deer & Rabbit Repellent is designed to protect plants, trees and shrubs from browsing damage caused by deer, big game and other animals such as rabbits & squirrels.  Deer Away contains a latex binder that resists washing off.  Under normal conditions, Deer Away will protect your trees and shrubs for up to 3 months.

Bird Control

Controlling birds in a blueberry field or wine grape vineyard can be a huge challenge. Here are a few bird facts.

  • Large flocks of birds are easier to scare than small ones.

  • Starlings will fly 25 km from a roosting site to feed, flying at up to 70 km/hr in short bursts.

  • Bird damage is usually localized and not uniformly distributed throughout an area.

  • Birds are opportunists, feeding on whatever is available

  • It is difficult to break birds of the habit of feeding in a particular area once they are established.

  • Birds establish their home territory in late April and May and often remain in the area until the crop ripens.

  • Crops near roosting or nesting areas, woodlots, rivers or ponds are more vulnerable than those in the open.

  • Birds acclimate quickly to uniform movements or noise patterns.

  • Birds can be diverted to other nearby feeding areas.

  • Birds will endure significant hardship to feed.

  • Birds often follow the same flight patterns to feed. Birds usually feed early in the morning around sunrise and late in the afternoon around sunset.

  • Birds like to drink water when they feed

  • Some birds travel in migratory flocks, while others fly in from the local woods

  • Birds feeding on your crop will attract other birds, compounding the problem.

  • The sweeter and earlier the grape, the more attractive it is to the birds.

The research and experiences of OVS/RP associates with vineyards and other local farmers has led OVS to recommend the following products:

Netting

The most effective bird control tool is placing a physical barrier between the crop and the bird.  OVS sells the Conwed brand of bird netting.  It is a ¾” x ¾” plastic mesh with UV inhibitor. It has a 30-36 month lifespan under constant sunlight, and should deter all problem birds. Blueberry growers typically build a frame above the fruit on which to lay the netting. Wine grape growers or blueberry growers with trellis systems will typically install the bird netting directly onto the trellis poles or posts and hook the net together underneath the fruit with plastic clips.

The most effective way to deter birds is to “mix-up” use of several different methods, as this keeps the birds confused and they do not habituate to any one method of control.

Bird Gard

The Bird Gard products are highly effective. Their line of digital bird repellers includes systems to suit most applications. Each bird repelling system features multiple sounds that are fully selectable and programmable for customized operation. All Bird Gard models repel birds by broadcasting a combination of audible distress calls of different bird species and /or artificially-generated harassment sounds that are effective in repelling hard-to-repel bird species. All units can be powered by AC current (except Super Pro Amp) or a 12 volt battery (which can be charged by an optional solar panel). The amount of acreage protected will be determined by the size of the unit. Seen below are the Pro model, which will cover about 1.5 acres and the Super Pro covers about 6 acres. Other models can protect up to 30 acres.

Cannons

OVS also carries a full line of propane powered cannons. They will typically provide bird harassment over 10-15 acres, depending on topography.

The Zon Mark 4 features a single shot, and the explosion cycle can be changed from every 40 seconds to 30 minutes with a dosage valve. Tripods and timers are available for this unit.

OVS carries two of the Scareaway cannons.  The M4 model has a single shot. The M8 model does six shots within 90 seconds, 45 seconds and 20 minute explosion intervals. Its one of the loudest models!  A revolving stand and a timer are also available.

The Purivox Triple Shot Carousel (not shown) is the most versatile bird cannon that OVS sells.  It comes with a 6’ tripod and a timer. It offers a 3 shot explosion cycle, with possible sequencing adjustments and the explosion intensity can also be adjusted.

Insect Control

RESCUE!® Reusable Yellow Jacket Traps: Rescue traps catch all major species of yellow jackets common to North America. The exclusive RESCUE!® Attractant replicates the sex pheromone of the yellow jackets to draw them inside the trap. The yellow jackets enter the trap through the holes on the bottom section, and then fly up through the interior cone into the clear yellow catch chamber. Once inside the trap, the yellow jackets cannot fly out and die of dehydration.

Bug Buster-O: Bug Buster-O is an organically certified insecticide that contains pyrethrum which is derived from chrysanthemums. This product can be used in flowers, vegetables, gardens and on residential ornamental plants. Approximate rate of use: 2 1/2 tablespoons per gallon of water.

Sluggo®: Sluggo is an OMRI certified organic material used for killing slugs and snails. Sluggo can be used in vegetables, fruits, outdoor ornamentals, greenhouses and lawns. Sluggo is also safe to use around domestic animals. Approximate rate of use: 1 pound per 1,000 square feet.

Hasta La Vista, Ant!: Weather/Moisture resistant granular bait to kill and control Ants, Cockroaches, Crickets, Mole Crickets and Silverfish. For use in and around homes, apartments, garages, public and private institutions, zoos and kennels. Nor for use in food areas. Approximate rate of use: 1 1/4 cups per 100 square feet.

Rodent Control

OVS offers multiple methods of rodent control, for example:

Quintox Mouse/Vole Bait: Quintox Rat and Mouse Bait: active ingredient, Choelcalciferol, known as Vitamin D3. This offers a different biological approach to killing rodents. Once a rodent eats Quintox, all feeding stops, unlike anticoagulants where feeding continues. The toxicant mobilizes calcium from the rodent's bones, producing hypercalcemia and heart failure. It acts faster than anticoagulants. Quintox is not certified organic (OMRI), but is generally accepted by most certifiers (Check with your certifier). Approximate rate of use: 1-2 Tablespoons per location.

Zinc Phosphide: Zinc Phosphide is an inorganic chemical that is used to control mice, rates, squirrels and other rodents. Zinc Phosphide is a restricted use chemical and can only be purchased or used by certified users. Approximate rate of use: Broadcast 10 Pounds per acre.

Kaput® Mole Gel Bait: Mole gel bait is uniquely attractive to moles and is packaged to ensure effective mole control. Its patented delivery system and formula provide a good solution for removing menacing moles from lawns and turf. Approximate rate of use: 1/2 ounce per tunnel.

Gopher & Mole Cinch Traps: Cinch traps are placed at the opening of gopher and mole burrows. When triggered the cinch trap closes squeezing the gophers or moles from the sides.

Protecta Bait Stations: PROTECTA bait stations are triangular shaped bait stations that fit in corners and along walls where rodents travel. Its "Low Profile" makes it ideal to use indoors under pallets and in other tight baiting locations.
