Warming Up

Posted by Rufus La Lone on

Monday June 3
Plenty of dry wx coming, with a pleasant mix of temperatures.  Let’s take a peek ahead.
Soils are drenched and the air is cleansed of pollen, for a couple of days, at least.  The dry pattern arrives by Wed, with clearing from south-to-north as Tue unfolds.  There will be showers Tue, with most of the precip falling north of Portland.  Overall, temps will remain mild through Wed.  The ‘heat-up’ begins Thu - with some of the warmer temps of the season possible on Fri - esp over western OR.  Expect 80s in most locations, with 90+ possible south of Eugene.  BC catches a rain-break, as well.  Enjoy.
Next weekend looks pleasant, with temps tapping down a bit as an onshore flow increases on Sunday.  Sat will be the warmer of the 2 days.  The onshore flow pattern will hold into the following week, so even though no rain is in our forecast, temps will be mild; cloudiness possible over the Puget Sound, north, as a very weak trough moves overhead on Tue.  Late week we see a cool air mass beginning to drop south over the eastern Pacific, opening the door for increased onshore breezes & somewhat cooler temps.  Morning ‘marine cloud deck’ possible, with afternoon sunshine inland.
The cool Low pressure ‘cell’ moving towards the PNW coast late next week (Jun 13,14) is currently modeled to finally push onshore over southern OR by the weekend of Jun 15,16, ushering in a SW flow and moisture, esp over the eastern basins and Idaho.  This pattern typically means WET and rather stormy wx across eastern regions of the PNW; clouds and showers are also possible for west side locations.  Temps on the cool side for June.  (This is a fairly ’new’ solution on the charts, so the Low may remain far enough offshore to keep the west side dry, with moisture training east of the Cascades.)
Warmer weather possible as the ’second half’ of June get underway.  So for now, we see pleasant temperatures with muggy humidity levels the week of Jun 17-21.  Although, continued Damp east side!

'New Month' Storm before Warmth

Posted by Rufus La Lone on

Friday May 31
Warm-up coming after the ’New Month’ storm drenches the region.  Refill time.
Pleasant conditions across the PNW today through most of Saturday.  Mild temps.  Clouds will begin to roll in Saturday over the Puget Sound, with RAIN arriving by Sunday morning across the PNW.
The ’New Month’ storm will be a real soaker for all of the PNW.  Eastern basins will also get precip, at times.  Expect the steady moderate-to-heavy rain to continue through Sunday night. Blustery!  Monday morning looks wet, as well, although the main front will have passed to the east.  A secondary band of rain may arrive later Monday into early Tue.  Most of the precip this time will fall over areas north of Salem.
Clearing begins late Tue, with a rapid warm-up for the entire PNW by Thu.  (Patrons in southern BC and NW WA may have lingering clouds on Wed Jun 5.)  Temps will pop into. the 80s, maybe a few 90s in the usual hot spots.  The warm pattern will hold into the weekend of Jun 8,9 — although models draw moisture up from the south over the eastern basins, combined with an onshore push of ‘air conditioning’ for western valleys.  Overall, it should be a mostly dry weekend.
For Jun 10 - 15: continued moisture over eastern OR into ID, with increasing chance for thunderstorms to the east & over the Cascades. Some storms may move out over the Willamette Valley late week.  It will be rather warm and MUGGY, esp for OR.  Patrons in NW WA are likely to remain somewhat cooler, with an onshore wind picking-up late week.
Generally dry & mild for the weekend of Jun 15,16.

Split Decision

Posted by Rufus La Lone on

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 2024 🇺🇸
We tip our Mugs honoring those that gave their lives in the service of our Nation.
The weather for the next 17 days (through June 12) is generally split between two zones, if you will.  1) Puget Sound, southern BC, Vancouver Island; 2) south of roughly Chehalis and east of the Cascades, both WA & OR, along with ID.  Here’s the rundown, as of today, May 27.
1) NW WA area & BC.  ☔️ Cloudy & wet at times every day except:
  • Dry today, May 27
  • Dry this coming Thursday - Saturday, May 30 - Jun 1
  • Dry Fri - Sunday Jun 6-9.  (STORMY east side of WA & over ID on Fri & Sat Jun 7,8.)
2) S of Chehalis & east sides.  ☀️ Sunny with mild-to-warm temps every day except:
  • Wet tomorrow -Tuesday & early Wednesday May 28,29
  • Wet Monday & Tuesday Jun 3,4 (mainly cloudiness south of Salem
  • Wet Monday - Wednesday Jun 10-12.
For all the PNW - the Jun 7-9 period could be the warmest consecutive run of days thus far in 2024.  Early yet to peg this forecast, as models have inconsistently hinted a ’summer ridge’ building into the region, from the south.  Stay tuned.
Bottom line — over the next 2 weeks, the Puget Sound corner of the PNW looks to be more wet than dry, with the opposite pattern for areas south of that zone.

Mostly Dry

Posted by Rufus La Lone on

Friday May 24
First holiday weekend of ’the summer’ begins after 5 today (for our US Patrons).  Weather will be fair after a damp start.  What will the following 10 days bring?  Well, that’s why you should have a Mug ready as you keep reading.
Wet system moving onshore as we write.  Most of the rainfall will be finished before Saturday afternoon, with warmer temps and a rather pleasant holiday weekend remaining - for OR, ID and the eastern basins.  However, please note, another, weaker disturbance is now charting to arrive over the Puget Sound region overnight Saturday, with additional showers & cloudiness into early Sunday morning the 26th.  Memorial Day itself continues to chart as dry & mild.
The short post-holiday work/school week looks to present increasing clouds on Tue, with showers possible - but not many.  Westerly winds really pick up in the Columbia River Gorge.  Go windsurfers!  Wed - Fri next week look dry & mild.  Temps may bump up into the 70s, esp over western OR, as the month of May comes ends.
June will start with a dry & mild-to-warm Saturday, turning cloudy, with a few widely scattered showers, mainly north of Portland on Sunday the 2nd (this system may not verify).  Then, indications are for a round of dry & rather WARM weather for the first week of June.  Westerly onshore breeze will pick-up mid-week, helping to tap down temperatures.  Still dry.  Friday and Saturday, June 7,8 may be a warm, with temps in the upper 80s possible; hotter east side.
Broadly speaking, expect some short-shots of precip at times, with lots of DRY DAYS throughout the next couple of weeks; much warmer late in the period.

Unsettled

Posted by Rufus La Lone on

Monday May 20
Our wx looks unsettled between now and the start of the holiday weekend.  Here's the latest reveal on the charts.
Today, the 20th, will be delightful & mild.  Later this evening, a system will move into the PNW from the NW.  Expect rain/showers to expand through western WA into OR before sunrise.  This is a rather wet system, as compared to the previous.  Colder air will arrive behind the steady rain later on Tue, with showers remaining in play through early Wed the 22nd.  Clearing on Wed, setting up another pleasant, although COOL, Thu with sunshine at times.  Unsettled conditions return overnight Thu, for a ‘repeat’ of the pattern early this week.  Rain/showers arrive, north-to-south, for a damp & unseasonably chilly Fri the 24th.
Memorial Day Weekend:  While the showers will decrease overnight Fri, Sat may have a few lingering showers, esp over the Puget Sound, along with cloudiness.  Still, Sat of the holiday weekend should present as generally dry.  Sunday & Mon are looking just fine, with sunshine and mild temperatures; gentle breezes.
Post-holiday week is trending dry & mild early, turning rather windy in the Columbia Gorge (from the west) later in the week, as an onshore flow increasings.  It may be a bit cloudy over the Puget Sound regions mid-week.
The first weekend of June is trending dry & mild on Sat, with increasing clouds & chance for showers - mainly over the Puget Sound - on Sunday.
How much precip?  This week - between overnight Mon & Wed afternoon - be ready for about a half inch of rain around the Puget Sound / BC; and less than 1/4”, if that, south of Portland.  Similar amounts are expected in the ‘repeat’ pattern charting for this coming Fri the 24th.
